Description

Thousands of years ago an orphan boy and his wolf cub companion challenge a demon bear that threatens to destroy their world forever. With the help of the World Spirit, Torak destroys the bear, but his beloved Wolf is lost in the ensuing avalanche. The book begins with some deviations from the usual formula, introducing new conflicts and unknown characters. However, it soon falls into the familiar pattern established in previous books, taking readers on a captivating journey. Unlike previous installments, the tension between Renn and Torak is replaced by conflicts with unfamiliar characters who haven't proven themselves worthy of trust. This can easily be read as a standalone novel, so skilful is the storytelling ... Okay--this is an excellent series, that has rightly gripped teens and adults as well as older kids. So why not five stars from me? However, I think my favourite element of this series is its creepy and ominous atmosphere. I thought that I’d perhaps misremembered how scary this series could occasionally get, but even now, reading Skin Taker as an adult, I’m impressed by how Michelle Paver is able to portray the scarier elements of the spirit world while still writing a book aimed at older children/younger teens. I wrote my first stories on my mother’s typewriter when I was five. I’ve still got some of them. One was about a rabbit called Hamish and a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Another, Ebany the Mouse Goddess, concerned a tribe of mice who burrowed to safety beneath an oncoming glacier. At school I wrote several plays, including one about the murder of Tutankhamun, and another about a family of cavemen.

I read the book in early December last year, during a particularly cold week and this only added to the feel of the book for me, as the cold seeps in and all hope seems to fade. These characters are some of my favourite I have ever encountered in any series. Yes, we all love Torak, Renn and of course, Wolf. But the supporting cast beyond the main trio are also a brilliant mix. As ever Fin-Keddinn is spellbinding. Dark continues to intrigue and with a host of new characters thrown in, showing different degrees of humanity in the pre-historic setting there is someone for all readers to fall in love with! I really felt for them all the way through this book, facing such adversity and having no choice but to pull together, regardless of clans and beliefs was so interesting to read, especially given the timely aspect of coronavirus and how it is bringing us all together as well! I've mentioned before that Paver helps to ignite a love and passion for the natural world (from my child and adult reading experiences), and that is another reason I can only recommend it. The themes in the book of community, friendship, kindness and respect for the natural world seem to be more important now than ever. It feels like a very important story considering the current climate and I wondered if you had any hopes for what your readers might take away from the book? The story starts in midwinter, when disaster strikes the Forest. Demons thrive. The clans battle to survive: do they turn on each other, or pull together? Torak, Renn and Wolf find their whole world in turmoil, and it’s up to them to save it. This is particularly hard for Torak – who, being especially close to the Forest, feels its devastation as no one else can.

In the " Musical Episode", the Skin-Taker is seen whispering to a bubbling whirlpool, which giggles. They change from time to time, but here are the ones that have lasted. For heroes, it’s Aragorn from The Lord of the Rings and Hector from The Iliad. For villains, it’s Dracula (the Bram Stoker one, of course), and Stavrogin from The Devils. Of course, in the original creepypasta, Candle Cove was revealed to be of dubious existence given how everyone who remembered it was actually watching static. However, this greatly emphasizes The Skin Taker's sinister qualities, as well as the rest of the show. Following on from the events of Viper’s Daughter, a meteorite strikes the forest, and the clans are plunged into darkness as even the first tree vanishes. Once again, our heroes set off to save the world, but to do so they must perform the most complicated of Mage Rites and confront a deadly evil. How is Skin Taker similar to the previous book in the series, Viper’s Daughter? How is it different? Still on bears, the episode when Torak bumps into a bear on a foggy river is based on the experience of an intrepid young Norwegian hiker whom I met on a trip to Malangenfjord in 2015. The same young woman also told me of a separate incident when she’d scared off a bear from entering her tent with a puff of pepper spray; I substituted earthblood when this happens to Dark. In the " Screaming Episode", Horace is seen screaming and flailing around violently along with the other puppets. Unlike the rest of the puppets, his is the only one not destroyed, and was only minorly damaged. The front cover design by John Fordham Design and the interior illustrations by Geoff Taylor are captivating and gorgeous! Can you remember how you felt when you saw them for the first time? What do you feel they add to the story? I know you research your books meticulously and often visit to places like Alaska for inspiration. Is there anywhere you haven’t been that you’d like to visit? The first book I remember looking at was a big illustrated book about Stone Age people, although at the time I was too young to read the captions. Two of the first books I actually read were Finn Family Moomintroll by Tove Jansson, and a terrifically exciting adventure about a horse, called The Sagebrush Sorrel. I’ve still got all three books. In " The New Ship", Poppy relives his memories of his first interaction with the Skin-Taker. Wearing a mask, Poppy tied the Skin-Taker to a chair and removed his skin, to avenge all those who had been skinned and killed by him. Although Poppy meant to kill him, the Skin-Taker is an Abyssian and cannot die, so he continued living as a skeleton. It is mentioned that Poppy does not know if the Skin-Taker is aware it was him who skinned him.

I really enjoyed in this book how it switched from each different character’s point of view and how In the Dark Time of midwinter, disaster strikes the Forest. Chaos rules. Bears woken from their dens prowl the shadowy valleys. He does not appear often in the season season, after Milo becomes the Skin-Taker's new servant. However, his trademark giggle is heard after Milo is decapitated. This is not intended to be a full statement of all your rights under the Distance Selling Regulations.
