Literary Career: Poe began his literary career as a critic, working for various magazines and newspapers. He also published his own poetry and short stories, which garnered attention for their dark, mysterious themes and intricate plots. Some of his most famous works, including "The Raven" and "The Tell-Tale Heart," were published in the mid-1800s. Although fictional, as a father, Landor is an enormously relatable character. When his daughter Mattie kills herself, like any other fictional or real father, Landor stoops to distress and becomes vulnerable to her haunting memories. When Poe becomes an integral part of his life, Landor succeeds in finding comfort in treating the cadet as his son. Kennedy, J. Gerald, ed. (2001). A Historical Guide to Edgar Allan Poe. Therefore, Augustus Landor is an outright fictional character; none with the same name or life had ever existed in Poe’s real life, especially during the six months the writer spent at the Military Academy. Since Bayard and Cooper conceived their versions of ‘The Pale Blue Eye’ as the origin story of Poe, who is renowned as the father of detective fiction, a mentor character does have immense significance.

How much pressure has to build before they explode in violence? What causes morality and decency to erode in otherwise decent people? Edgar Allan Poe probed these questions repeatedly in his writings, and the answer was often just a hint of deeper, more unfathomable problems at play. In “The Tell-Tale Heart,” the provocation for murder was the victim’s cataract: “One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture—a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold.”Noel Fielding Almost Chokes Up Sending Two Bakers Home on 'The Great British Baking Show' "Pastry Week" Campbell, Killis (1962). "The Origins of Poe". Although the name "Israfel" does not appear in the Qur'an, mention is repeatedly made of an unnamed trumpet-angel assumed to identify this figure: "And the trumpet shall be blown, so all those that are in the heavens and all those that are in the earth shall swoon, except Allah; then it shall be blown again, then they shall stand up awaiting." —Qur'an (39.68). The poem details the beauty of the unearthly song of Israfil, as stars and other heavenly bodies stand transfixed in muted silence. Poe further alludes to Islam by referencing "Houri" as another heavenly entity entrapped amidst the majesty of Israfil's lyre. It is likely that such Islamic references were used to give the work an exotic feel. The poem concludes with the author wondering as to whether if their places traded, he could craft a bolder melody from his lyre than Israfil. The poem parallels Coleridge's "Kubla Khan" in the inspiring yet ultimately unfulfilling song of a heavenly muse. [ citation needed]

Edgar Allan Poe was a prominent American author, poet, and literary critic in the 19th century. He is considered one of the fathers of the modern detective story and a master of horror and suspense. Here are some of his most well-known books: What most people don’t know about Poe is that when he was younger, he was very warm, witty, and humorous,” Cooper says. “He was, by all accounts, thought to be a great companion. When we think of Poe, we conjure up these images of the macabre. And we’ve seen that daguerreotype photo of him, which was taken a few days after his suicide attempt, so we feel that this is a man who kind of toils in darkness. But in fact, he was much warmer and witty and humorous. And that’s what I wanted to explore.” What is a Dauphinoise Potato Pithivier? How Dana Accidentally Aced 'The Great British Baking Show' "Pastry Week" Technical ChallengeWhen Scott Cooper decided to adapt the novel to a film, the filmmaker wanted to depict the possible inspirations and influences that shaped Poe as a writer. “Of course, this is a work of fiction,” Cooper told Tudum in the same interview. “What I’m saying is: these events that occur in our film shaped his worldview and helped him become the writer that he became –– with the recurring themes that deal with the questions of death, and the effects of decomposition and reanimation of the dead and mourning –– all those things that are considered part of his dark romanticism,” he added. Bayard and Cooper’s vision to depict Poe’s influences such as occultism and satanism became the foundation of Lea Marquis’ storyline. Image Credit: Scott Garfield/Netflix
