The traders and community launched the Save Brixton Arches [13] campaign, which fed into the anti-gentrification movement already underway within the Brixton community [14] and culminated in a protest at the local council meeting where community activists declared the "death of Brixton" after the plans were approved. [9] In 2017, the majority of the arches traders ceased trading and hoardings were installed over the empty premises, but development has stalled due to complications involving the leases of two of the tenants. [15] The South London Club Card will take you on a tour of South London that you've never experienced before, showcasing our fantastic local businesses that are the lifeblood of our communities. The Market began on Atlantic Road in the 1870s and subsequently spread to Brixton Road which had a very wide footway. Brixton then was a rapidly expanding London railway suburb with newly opening shops, including the first London branch of David Greig at 54-58 Atlantic Road in 1870, and London's first purpose-built department store, Bon Marché, on Brixton Road in 1877. [1] The market was a popular attraction, with shoppers being entertained by street musicians. This section relies excessively on references to primary sources. Apologies to those of our readers who have been on tenterhooks waiting for the results of our annual poll. But finally, after a few weeks (maybe a month, but we went on holiday, so apologies), we can finally announce the winner of the coveted Best Restaurant in Brixton for 2019 goes to … Only seven months after launching, Market Row Botanical Rum was awarded a silver medal in another prestigious global competition – the International Spirits Challenge 2021, which receives 1,800 entries from nearly 70 countries worldwide. More infoQuite how Hondo can claim any connection with Club 414 is baffling, because although they may now own the building, they have absolutely no claim to the brand, or any right to claim the legacy created by their previous owners. Join in with the discussion Finally – and we did then move to a comfy sofa and the TV – we had the dessert and each one is enough for two. It was a coffee panna cotta (although actually more of a fluffy mouse) with a chocolate ganache top and some crumbs to sprinkle over it. This was also when the top trouser button was undone – fantastically delicious end to the meal. We were delighted with the side dishes. The Atassi rice and beans was really good for soaking up the sauce on both dishes and the plantain with peanut sauce was a perfect foil for the spice in both dishes. Reliance Arcade is Grade II listed, and was added to English Heritage's Heritage At Risk Register in October 2014. [3]

Danclair’s is the newest opening from Brian Danclair, founder of much-loved Brixton Village stalwart Fish, Wings & Tings. Inspired by the hospitality of his grandmother Valentina, Danclair’s serves family dishes at a long sharing table in the centre of the restaurant, allowing for a convivial dining experience. The menu draws inspiration from across the Caribbean, Latin America and Europe, with dishes including BBQ pork ribs, empanadas with raisins and olives, and marinated grilled king prawns with tamarind sauce – alongside a weekend brunch. Despite Hondo claiming to be a ‘ small bunch of industry outsiders,’ here’s the kind of money that they deal in: Owner Etta is possibly the only restaurateur in Brixton who can say she has been a local resident for more than 40 years. With the help of friends and family, Etta’s Seafood Kitchen has grown organically since it launched via Brixton’s ‘empty shops project’ in 2011. This is the place to head to for celebrations and gatherings with a family feel. Menu highlights include saltfish fritters with spicy dipping sauce, scallop salad with lime dressing, sweet potato and pumpkin curry, and fish soup with vermicelli noodles. The cauliflower was well cooked and the spiced green sauce is what it said on the menu – spicy – and the peanut sauce added to the thrill. We didn’t need the puffed rice.Electric Avenue which is now part of the street market was built in the 1880s and was one of the first streets to have electric light. Glazed iron canopies covered the footpath, but these were significantly damaged by WW2 bombs, and finally removed in the 1980s. The song " Electric Avenue" was written by Eddy Grant referring to this area of the market. In 2016, Electric Avenue was refurbished with funding from the Mayor of London's High Street Fund, Lambeth Council, Transport for London and the Heritage Lottery fund to include an illuminated sign celebrating the area's history. Well-integrated with a meaty taste, and subtle on the botanicals. Unique.” Popped in to the cafe for lunch, a good menu selection available catering for all needs. Service was fast and efficient. If you are hungry, then this is the place to go, the food is plentiful and at a very reasonable price. This cafe is...very popular especially with the locals, and as they say always go where the locals eat. read more.
