About this deal

While there are many different species of water snakes, the yellow-bellied water snake is perhaps the most well-known. The non-venomous scarlet kingsnake has an incredibly similar appearance to the venomous coral snake. The Yellow-bellied Sea Snake has the distinction of being the most widely ranging snake in the world, as well as the most aquatic, never having to set scale on land or sea floor its entire pelagic life. Identification The non venomous common kingsnake ( Lampropeltis getula) is a common sight. The species is widespread with populations along most of the East Coast.

There are only six venomous snake species in Arkansas – one coral snake and five vipers. Copperhead Copperheads are vicious-looking snakes that prefer to avoid people. Fish and other small water organisms are the main food sources for the specialist hunter Hydrophis spiralis. Despite their considerable size, these snakes are calm and docile around humans. They rarely bite and spend most of their time hiding in burrows. It’s easy to see why they’re so popular among reptile enthusiasts. Albino Ball pythons are always in high demand, and most specimens on the market are captive-bred and thus easy to keep. 2. Yellow Corn Snake If a yellow-bellied water snake feels threatened, it may inflate its body and hiss to scare off the perceived threat. If that doesn’t work, it may strike with its mouth closed as a warning. It is a specialist hunter that eats fish and other small aquatic organisms and has a long, slender body that is ideally suited for swimming. In the last few years we’ve been finding sea snakes in places we haven’t seen them before, whether it’s in really, really deep waters or in really high or low latitudes,” says Vinay Udyawer, a research scientist at the Australian Institute of Marine Science specialising in sea snake ecology and distribution. Yellow-bellied water snakes may be mistaken for venomous snakes such as cottonmouths or copperheads, which can be dangerous. Ehmann, H. (1992) “Encyclopedia of Australian Animals : Reptiles”, Australian Museum, Angus & Robertson

Forty-seven species of snake have been recorded in Trinidad and Tobago, making the snake population of this area the most diverse in the Caribbean. Forty-four of these snake species are found in Trinidad and twenty-one in Tobago. Many of these species are South American, most of which are present in Venezuela. Trinidad and Tobago consists of two main islands, Trinidad and Tobago, and several smaller islands. The Bocas Islands, which lie between Trinidad and Venezuela, in the Bocas del Dragón ( Dragon's Mouths), consist of Chacachacare, Monos, Huevos and Gaspar Grande. Several smaller islands lie off Trinidad, but snakes have been recorded on only one of them, Caledonia Island. Snakes have been recorded on one island off Tobago, Little Tobago. Four species are venomous: two coral snake species ( Micrurus spp. [note 1]), the fer-de-lance ( Bothrops atrox) and the South American bushmaster ( Lachesis muta). The common coral ( Micrurus fulvius) is found on at least two of the Bocas Islands: Gaspar Grande and Monos. No venomous snakes inhabit Tobago.Charles, Stevland P.; Stephen Smith (2009). "A New Locality Record for the Coral Snake, Micrurus circinalis (Reptilia: Serpentes: Elapidae) on Monos Island, Trinidad and Tobago" (PDF). Living World, Journal of the Trinidad and Tobago Field Naturalists' Club: 41–42. Archived from the original (PDF) on 14 March 2012. They have a greenish-yellow belly, and their dorsal scales have dark blotches or bands. They have a brown or olive-colored body, with some having a reddish tint. Yellow-Bellied Water Snakes’ Diet and Behavior The yellow-bellied sea snake ( Hydrophis platurus) is a venomous species of snake from the subfamily Hydrophiinae (the sea snakes) found in tropical oceanic waters around the world except for the Atlantic Ocean. For many years, it was placed in the monotypic genus Pelamis, but recent molecular evidence indicates it lies within the genus Hydrophis. It is a crucial species in its ecosystem because it aids in maintaining the balance of the food chain and regulating the populations of other marine animals.

Scientists take the lengths of the longest animals to form the maximum length- the absolute largest size a species can reach. Boidae is a family of non-venomous snakes found in America, Africa, Europe, Asia and some Pacific Islands, containing the boas. Four species have been recorded in Trinidad and Tobago. Typhlopidae is a family of blind snakes found mostly in the tropical regions of Africa, Asia and the Americas. Two species have been recorded in Trinidad and Tobago.
