Learning to focus ones attention on only the information needed, while being able to discard irrelevant information is an important skill for learners of all ages and abilities. In conclusion, I would strongly encourage those playing Shopping List with a young child to consider adding an additional player or two. Especially if the young child is finding the game play too easy. It is a strategy I plan on exploring further with some of our grandson's similar games. Today, Owen and I played "Shopping List" with 3 players, rather than just the two of us. The inclusion of an additional player added a whole new dimension to the memory aspect of the game play that I am quite embarrassed to admit was one which I hadn't quite anticipated would have such a impact on Owen's level of engagement and determination. Players take turns turning over landmark cards and matching them to their passport playing boards – the winner is the player who fills their board first. Each passport board features fun fact files on the reverse to further learning – just how long ago where the pyramids built, and how tall is Mount Everest?! The items in this gift guide were gifted items but all thoughts words and love of Orchard toys are completely my own. I have only included toys that would make perfect gifts and that we genuinely love.* This change of mind return policy is in addition to, and does not affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law including any rights you may have in respect of faulty items. The set if suitable for up to 4 players, Each having a trolley or a basket that they have to fill with the items on their shopping list. Turn over the cards to see everyday items, from tomatoes to washing powder to pizza. If they match a picture on your shopping list, name the item out loud and add it to your trolley. Be the first to collect all the items on your shopping list in this fun Orchard Toys game. Older children can play this learning game more strategically by remembering where the cards from their list have been placed, encouraging memory and observation skills.

Owen still displayed his usual eagerness to help everyone find their items (which I believe is good trait), and was he no more focused on "winning" the game than he had been when just he and I played. But he was definitely more focused on remembering a cards location in respect to the other cards. Also, he was less apt to turn over the same card repeatedly. Moreover, I noticed that Owen took more time in choosing a card, and seemed to be trying harder to remember both the location of the tile and which tiles had yet to be selected. In case you aren’t familiar with it, Shopping List is a matching and memory game where players race to be the first to fill their playing boards by collecting the items on their shopping list. It’s simple, yet effective and it’s a great way to get little ones talking about different types of food! Match and Spell encourages letter recognition, teaches phonetic word building and promotes matching of pictures and words, from simple words like ‘cat’ to more complex four-letter words. There are two ways to play, and the game is designed for both guided and independent word building. There is also an extension kit which develops more advanced reading and spelling skills. Shape Monsters

This is a favourite with our three year old! The game can be used to get children interested in cooking by talking about the different ingredients and utensils, as well as foods from around the world. The addition of the spinner turns Crazy Chefs into a game of chance to see who will cook their meal first! It’s one way we got our three year old to try some noodles!! Smelly Wellies Over the past 25 years the game has had not one, not two but five exciting makeovers! The food cards have evolved to reflect changing tastes – for instance at some point the decision was made that maybe Bovril wasn’t top of everyone’s shopping list and it was replaced with the nations favourite takeaway – pizza! This is a newer game from Orchard Toys which was certainly a hit with my daughter! Again, it has two ways to play so it will last children until they are older. It’s a magical fun matching game with lovely colourful pieces. D olls House Jigsaw Puzzle The account below contains an account of some of the insights I gained from some my experiences playing Shopping List with my grandson. While I believe the narrative provides some worthwhile observations, it is a rather long account and so I have decided to separated from my review of the product.
