Tog, size and type of filling were the three most important considerations reported by the duvet owners we asked. Other important factors included whether the duvet was machine washable, labelled hypoallergenic, and how much it cost. That is why we have come up with a list of some of the best anti-allergy, hypoallergenic duvets we have found on the market, to give you an idea on what products are out there so you can make a more informed decision and hopefully help rid you of your allergies. Emily Attwood, founder of sleep-brand scooms agrees, ''We’d always advise a 9 tog to 13.5 tog for the winter months as this is ideal and will keep you warm. If your house is always on the warmer side, then a 9 tog duvet would probably suit you better throughout the winter months, and you wouldn’t want to go any higher. This will prevent you from overheating which can disrupt your sleep.' Microfibre duvets are a relatively recent addition to the market, but they aren't to be confused with hollowfibre. Microfibres are finer but don't have the hollow space that hollowfibre has. Instead, microfibre is intended to be a synthetic equivalent to down; its extra-fine fibres give the same feel. Dust mites are micro tiny creatures which breed and thrive in dark humid places e.g your duvet. The dead skin cells left behind in your bedding gives them plenty to feed on. Where do your allergens come from? well, we recommend you put away your food if your eating now.

Don't buy it if: you truly want to splash out on the best duvet for your boudoir. This option is very good for its price, but the higher feather mix does mean it feels more 'clumpy' than the 90% down alternatives on our list. That said, this is still a great buy, and the addition of feathers does make the duvet a little more breathable than a duvet with a higher down percentage, albeit not quite as warm. The terms non-allergenic, hypoallergenic and anti-allergenic are widely used by duvet makers in the UK, but what exactly does that mean and is there a difference?Non-allergenic is where the actual duvet won't cause any allergies, but that doesn't mean dust mites are not present. Hypoallergenic duvets mean they are less likely to cause or trigger any allergies. Finally, anti-allergenic means that the duvets have been treated in some way to resist the buildup of dust mites or offer some sort of protection against their allergens. Choose The Right Anti-allergy Duvet Buy it if: you're looking for the very best duvet for a great night's sleep. This wool-filled duvet is an investment, but we've tried and tested some of the best winter duvets on the market, and in our opinion, this is the cream of the crop. It's the warmest we've come across, keeping our testers warm and toasty throughout the night without any of the overheating or night sweats that occurred with other high tog options. That's thanks to the naturally thermoregulating properties of wool that allow moisture to escape whilst still providing insulation. Handmade in Yorkshire using 100% traceable British Cheviot wool and certified organic cotton this is also a great eco-friendly option, with wool completely biodegradable. The Silentnight anti-allergy duvet is filled with anti-allergy hollowfibre fill which actively prevents the duvet from dust mites and bacteria. These fibres are approved by the British Allergy Foundation which means it has been independently scientifically tested and proven to reduce or remove allergens from the indoor environment. Generally, the filling is of little relevance in terms of combating allergies, but it is important to investigate why you are receiving your reactions. Could it be the feather, latex or wool core? One downside to all natural duvet fillings, including feather and down, is that you shouldn’t wash them at home as they can lose their filling more easily and are difficult to get completely dry afterwards. If they are cared for properly and professionally laundered, feather and down duvets can last more than twice as long as synthetic alternatives. Wool duvets: pros and cons

Organic cotton: a fantastic choice for those with sensitive skin, organic cotton is pesticide free, hypoallergenic, pigment-free and therefore void of any harmful finishing chemicals such as bleach and formaldehyde. Though hypoallergenic duvets won’t be filled with cotton alone, they are often encased in organic cotton for extra protection against allergens. Hypoallergenic means that the actual material and filling of the duvet isn't made of a known potential allergen, like feathers or wool. But other allergens, mainly dust mites, can still develop on these types of duvets. Why you can trust Ideal Home Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test. Dust mite poop produce an allergen which us humans are prone to getting and as it is so tiny it is also easily inhaled causing the common allergy symptoms. How Often Should I Change My Bedding?Don't buy it if: you really want to layer on the warmth. This 13.5 tog duvet is plenty snuggly enough, but we think the wool and down options just pip it to the post in terms of cosiness. That said, this synthetic option is far easier to care for as it's machine washable and can be tumble dried on a low heat setting. Cons: Can be expensive, needs to be washed gently at a low temperature, can seem flat in comparison with other fillings Both my husband and I have been sleeping better since we bought this duvet. Only problem is I don’t want to get out of bed in the morning!!!!! As well as having a tog rating (see below for more information on these), feather and down duvets are rated by their fill power. The higher the fill power, the larger each individual piece of down will be, resulting in a loftier, fluffier duvet, which provides better insulation. Another solution is to opt for an 'all-season' duvet. This consists of two separate lighter tog duvets that can be joined together (usually by way of press studs) to make a warmer winter duvet. Most commonly an all-season duvet will include a 4.5 tog and 9 tog duvet that can create a 13.5 tog duvet once combined, or a 4.5 tog and 10.5 tog duvet that will create a warmer 15 tog combination.
