About this deal

Description: Tradescantia spathaceaSN|25968]]SN|25968]] is a rather succulent small and low-growing plant, with rosettes of waxy lance-shaped leaves metallic green above, with glossy purple underneath. This plant is also known as Rhoeo discolorSN|25969]]SN|25971]] and more frequently in the horticulture trade as Rhoeo spathaceaSN|25971]]SN|25969]]. The species name is a Latin word referring to the spathe-like large bracts which envelope the flower. It is a very attractive foliage plants. Widely cultivated: a variant with wholly green leaves is 'Concolor' and another with red and pale yellow-green yellow is 'vittata'.

Davidse, G., M. Sousa Sánchez & A.O. Chater. "Alismataceae a Cyperaceae." 6: i–xvi, 1–543. In G. Davidse, M. Sousa Sánchez & A.O. Chater (eds.) Fl. Mesoamer.. Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, México, D. F. 1994Chartreuse. This is a light yellowish green color. Mix four of chrome yellow and five of chrome green lightening up with white. Bremen Blue. This is a color to be bought only ready made. It is not much used, and is not suitable for an oil color. Whiting is sold under a variety of names, such as Spanish white, Paris white, English white. Whiting is the carbonate of calcium, purified by washing. It is prepared by grinding chalk under water to a very fine powder by passing it through several mills. The powder is run into tanks in which the coarser and heavier particles settle, while the liner chalk passes on to other tanks in which it settles. When the settling tanks are full, the chalk or whiting is dug out and dried. When partially dry it is cut into masses of a cubical shape and dried. When dry it is ground. Light Pink. Tint white lead with a little pure vermilion. The word pink does not bear any very definite meaning, as almost any bright red such as carmine or crimson added to plenty of white give a good pink just as vermilion does, but of another hue. A very pretty and useful pink is made by adding white to permanent crimson madder.

Primrose. Ten parts of white, three parts of green and four parts of yellow will give this light greenish yellow. Another shade is got by mixing one part of orange, two parts of green and five parts of yellow. Cherry Red. Mix together crimson lake, burnt sienna and azure blue, or two parts of vermilion and one part of carmine. Exposure: Dappled shade to half sun; this species thrives in dry, luminous locations. If it is getting too much sun, the leaves turn yellow, start curling and look unsightly. When grown under shady or partly shady conditions, it becomes scraggly and unattractive. It ideally should be grown in a semi-shaded as the leaves will remain a beautiful jade-green colour. It will also grow in the most uncongenial shady places and can form a dense carpet under trees or shrubs, and brings light into gloomy areas. Starling's Egg Green. A mixture of light chrome and Prussian blue, lightened up with white, will produce this color.Flowers: Flowers numerous between the pairs of boat shaped bracts, scarcely projecting. 10-15(-20) mm in diameter. Tepals 3 white (or pinkish), elliptic. Petals 3, white. Stamens 6 with white filaments and yellow anthers. Sepals, petals and stamens free and approximatively equal. Ovary 3-celled with a single ovule per cell. Flower-stalks approx 15 mm long, recurved.

Tertiary colors are colors made by combining a secondary color with a primary color. There are six tertiary colors. In the RGB color wheel these are orange, chartreuse green, spring green, azure, violet and rose. Fruits (capsules): 3-locular, ellipsoid, apex pointed, 8-25(-30) mm long with accuminate valves, dehishing longitudinally. Snuff Brown. French ochre and Indian red added to zinc white will produce this color. Another way to produce a snuff color is to mix four parts of medium yellow and two parts of Vandyke brown, or burnt umber may be substituted for the Vandyke brown if desired. Another snuff color may be obtained by mixing burnt umber and yellow ochre, tinging with a little Venetian red. Quaker Drab. This greenish gray shade is produced by mixing two parts each of yellow and green and five parts of white.Terra Cotta. Mix together two parts of white lead and one part of burnt sienna. One of the best ways to produce a good terra cotta wall is to give a good under coat of white lead, orange chrome and a little Venetian red, and when dry to apply a finished coat made from Venetian red and a little orange chrome to which has been added a little white.

Flowers: Single, starry, 6-lobed, diurnal, greenish or white 10-16 mm wide, scattered on the long twining raceme. Pedicels arched. 2-10 cm long. Tepals free to the base, 5-9(-12) x 3.5 mm, white or green to yellowish-green, patent or reflexed, oblong to lanceolate, margins revolute toward the base, apex subacute. Styles 6, terete, stigma three lobed. Filaments suberects. Blooms are produced only in moderate to full sun where the plant produces dozens of flowers on each shoot. The flowers have an unpleasant smell. Exposure: It cannot take direct sun in summer but generally needs sun part of the day to bloom. In deep shade it gets pretty weak and leggy and eventually rots and dies. As houseplants, give crassulas up to 6 hours a day of sun. Gypsum mixes well with either water or oil, and, being neutral in its properties, it can be mixed with all other pigments without affecting them or being affected by them. It is used very largely by paper stainers and makers of wall paper, who prefer it to barytes on account of its having more body when used for that class of work. It is used in finishing of cotton goods, in paper making, and for a variety of other purposes where a cheap white pigment is required.Vienna Smoke. The best burnt umber should be tinted with lemon chrome yellow and a little Venetian red.
