Luckily, most mowers work within an electronic perimeter wire, which will orientate and guide the mower, laid “around the lawn edge just under the surface of the turf.

Designed to cut lawns up to 800m2 at a height of 20mm to 60mm, this compact mower drops its clippings back onto the surface of the grass for a naturally fertilised, healthier lawn. You just start the mower going and it will set itself off at the same time every day, or every other day. EASY TO INSTALL – Easy one-time set-up of boundary wire, charging station and robot mower with fully comprehensive step-by-step instructions. This is hard to explain without diagrams, but those of you with such an island second lawn will understand what I mean.

For smaller gardens that don’t need as much maintenance, there’s even an option to run it every other day, so it’s pretty versatile. We've got a pretty big garden (1/3rd acre roughly) but give him a couple of days and he has it looking like a golf course. The instructions propose leaving 30cm between boundary wire and the boundary, but this can be a bit closer unless there is low raised edging to the lawn which if the robot gets too close can ride up slightly and get stuck. This is a great feature as it limits the amount of additional work cutting around the edge of the lawn.

They add: “These include alarms if the mower is moved outside of its perimeter boundary, security sensors, PIN codes and GPS tracking to monitor its location. Revolutionary, this hassle-free device will free you from cutting grass and for those of us who are greeted with hay fever in the high-pollen months, we are surely thankful that we have to chance to avoid any more sniffles and sore eyes. Despite being essential for the setup process, you’d be surprised how many mowers expect you to have one of these in your toolbox, so it’s a welcome addition here. It may lack the features of more expensive robot mowers, but it offers enough to keep your grass in great shape without too much human interaction. It’s solid, reliable and has plenty of additional features that’ll help your garden look fabulously lush and trim.

Obviously some of us have a bit of extra time on our hands at the moment and I’m without a gardener for the time being. I’ve worked with some hefty robot mowers before so I was looking forward to working with a more compact and lightweight - or at least easier to lift - model, and that is exactly what I got with the LawnMaster L10. A robotic lawn mower is nothing without a good set of safety features and you’ll be pleased to know that the LawnMaster L10 isn’t lacking in this department. With such a large gap, you can expect to have to deal with a strip of long grass that’s at least 20cm wide. It’s waterproof, PIN-code protected and will mulch your grass, meaning a healthy lawn – and an envious neighbour.

And, if it hits an obstacle it has bump collision detection, which means it simply reverses and carries on. The L10 is tough, durable, IPX5 rated to be fully waterproof and comes with a 2 year manufacturer's warranty. We would have liked to see more scheduling options, but there is always the option to start manually when you want. Take a look at my video where you will see the half of the lawn that is mulched is so much greener and healthier than the half that is cut and collected with a traditional mower. But, it's worth noting that the mower follows the wire back to the charging station when you press the Home button, so it's best to stick to the recommended distance. They can be cleaned and sharpened but replacement is simple and quick and the spares are not expensive. It doesn’t require a huge technical knowledge to get started and yet you’ll still be left with a clean and neat finish for your lawn.

It has three cutting blades, which are connected to a spinning disc on its underside, and these give it a cutting width of 18cm. Because the mower doesn’t have an app, it doesn’t need to be connected to a Wi-Fi network or paired with a mobile device via Bluetooth. Every time I test a lawnmower I leave my lawn to grow to around 4 inches (100mm) to give it a good test.

I’m also a bit of a gadget bloke so loved the idea, however I was put off by some of the other robots due to the massive expense of some or the limited cutting size of some of the cheapest. Though not a practical element to consider, My Robot Mower explains that it provides a great conversation topic and the free time provides “a continued sense of satisfaction.
