Description
Join Philip, Dinah, Lucy-Ann and Jack as they go on all sorts of thrilling adventures, including River, Circus, Ship and many more. This book feels so innocent now, but in a good way that enhances childhood rather than creates a fear of the unknown and mistrust of everything. Bill Cunningham: An important member (holding the rank of inspector) of an unspecified secret service force (possibly based upon the British Secret Intelligence Service). But when Micky, Philip's new monkey, breaks his birthday present, all the children are plunged into an exciting quest to find the lost treasure of the Andra with some ruthless villains hot on their trail.
When he meets Philip and hears about Craggy-Tops, the old half-ruined house on the cliff by the sea where Philip and Dinah live, his eyes glaze over as he thinks about all the bird-watching he could do if he ever got a chance to visit. In the end, Jack and Lucy-Ann are allowed to stay because Jack’s pet parot is the only living being that’s ever expressed compassion for Dinah’s aunt, who is having a mental breakdown. That, of course, has always been part of its appeal – underdogs appeal to us, and making your heroes into Dickensian orphans goes a long way.The Island of Adventure needs to be re-released, preferably a full HD remastered version, so that everyone can come to love the many colourful catchphrases from this fantastic film: "I hate mackerel pie", "She flew in through the window?
Enid Blyton is one of the world's best-selling children's authors with sales of her books in excess of 500 million copies. And most shockingly, I never read any Famous Five at all (though I did once have a very complicated sort of choose-your-own-adventure Famous Five kit with dice and special apparatus). The quality is quite poor, in-keeping with the eps not being purchased one, but just scrounged off the iThanks you Enid, and nternet. At first she adopts Jack and Lucy-Ann into her family, providing them a loving home; later she marries their common friend Bill and finds a new family with all of them. It includes wonderful black and white illustrations by Stuart Tresilian which will help bring this lovely story to life.Inscription in ink to front endpaper (dated 1944); part of ink name has transferred across to front pastedown. I needed something easy to read that was going to require zero effort, so I reverted back to my childhood and picked up one of my Enid Blyton books. I forgot how I used to read quickly to find out what was going to happen next, and this hasn’t changed. Bill finds his boat has been set on fire – much more dramatic than them finding it has a hole hacked in the bottom – and goes to Craggy Tops. There they meet Joe, a friendly man who helps Philip's widowed mother Allison, at her Art Gallery, and Philip's sister, Dinah.
On top of that he is portrayed quite badly – believing in “things” wandering at night, being quite mad as well as slow, lazy, stupid and rolling his eyes a lot. But as quick as she is to explode, she's also quick to cool—so while her quarrels with her annoying brother are often loud and physical, they're over very quickly and there seems to be no evidence of her bearing grudges or sulking. Probably the most notable henchman was Ray Uma's henchman, Taj, in "The River of Adventure", who appeared to be more intelligent than his master, and had a major role in the episode's plot. Living at Craggy-Tops are Uncle Jocelyn – an absent-minded scholar obsessed with the history the local coastline, Aunt Polly – a hard-working woman struggling to run the old decrepit house and Jo-Jo their black handyman/servant. She says she's been without him all through the school term and doesn't want to be without him during the holidays too.I was honestly not sure where to start with this review as I have very mixed feelings about this adaptation. Dustwrapper is worn, edge chipped, slightly grubby with a few foxspots and a little browned to spine. Kiki the parrot is Jack's pride and joy and has instilled herself very quickly in the first book as a major character, with her amazing knack of coming out with just the right phrase for the situation.
