Dad’s fund-raising challenge to keep pre-school open

A FATHER from Elmley Castle is spearheading a fund-raising challenge to help keep Little Comberton Pre-school open.

The pre-school, which currently caters for about 10 children and meets in Little Comberton Village Hall, is short of funds and is in danger of closing.

There is a long-term plan to move the pre-school to a base at Elmley Castle Primary School where it would be able to offer more extensive facilities such as breakfast and after-school clubs.

But in meantime, father-of-two Jim Rumsey, whose wife Karen is pre-school secretary, is organising the ‘Bredon Hill Challenge’ on Sunday, March 25th, in a bid to raise some of the £2,500 the pre-school needs in the next few months to stay open.

Jim will be joined by about six others in an attempt to cycle 25 miles round Bredon Hill, then walk up to the top of the hill while carrying a share of the combined weight of all the children currently at the pre-school – approximately 20 stone – and then repeat the 25-mile ride around the hill.

Jim, who has a daughter at the pre-school and a son at Elmley School, said: “It’s basically me and about five or six other guys who are going to do it. It should be quite painful! We are just trying to raise as much money as possible.”

Jim told the Bredon Hill View the pre-school was in a “pretty serious” situation in the short-term.

“If they get to the end of this school year then next year the funding starts again and they should be fine,” he said. “I think one of the concerns is that if local facilities go, it affects everything.”

Jim added: “I would love more people to join in the challenge – the more the merrier. But the key is sponsorship.”

The first leg of the bike ride starts at 8am and Jim hopes the challenge will be completed sometime in the afternoon, when they will be joined by supporters for a drink in the Queens.
